France's President was welcomed on 24 May 2018 by his Russian counterpart for a two-day official visit. The two leaders held talks at the highest level on topics relating to these countries' bilateral relations, as well regional and international matters.

Further information:

The visit was conducted a year after a similar official trip was made by Russia's President to France. The historical links between the two countries were highlighted and hoped for reconciliation going forward.

The meeting took place as tension remained between Russia and Western countries due to a variety of events in different parts of the world. The US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran and the contacts between the United States and North Korea were also among the debated issues during the official visit.
