A bomb attack on the St.Petersburg metro in Russia on the 3 April 2017 killed 14 people and wounded more than 40. Russian authorities claimed it was probably a terrorist attack from a suicide bomber.

Kyrgyzstan's security service named the alleged bomber as Akbarzhon Jalilov, who was born in the Kyrgyz second city of Osh in 1995 and had obtained Russian citizenship.

Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asia republic formerly part of the Soviet Republic and still with close links to Russia. It is a majority Muslim country.

Russia had suffered a number of terrorist attacks in the recent past:

+ Russia’s ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was shot dead at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital of Ankara on the 19 December 2016.

+ On the 31 October 2015 an Airbus A321 plane from the Russian company Kogalymavia, connecting Egypt's Sharm El-Sheik and Russia's St Petersburg crashed, killing 224 people on board. Subsequently, so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility.
