Sweden hopes to use its time at the EU helm to forge closer relations with Russia

Prime Minister Göran Persson said the time was right for developing ties with the country now that it has a popular new president and an improving economy. The Swedes are organising an EU-Russia conference for March at which the two sides will discuss what steps Russia can take to improve its chances for membership of the World Trade Organisation.
