The results of the referendum held in the United Kingdom on the 23 June 2016 on whether the UK should remain in or leave the European Union:

Remain: 16,141,241 (48.1%)
Leave: 17,410,742 (51.9%)
Total Electorate: 46,500,001
Turnout: 72.2%

Prime Minister David Cameron made a statement in Downing Street on the 24 June 2016 on the outcome of the referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union. He said he would resign as Prime Minister before October 2016.

A negotiation with the European Union would need to begin under a new Prime Minister, and Mr Cameron thought it right that this new Prime Minister took the decision about when to trigger Article 50 and start the formal and legal process of leaving the EU.

The Governor of the Bank of England made a statement about the steps that the Bank and the Treasury were taking to reassure financial markets.
