Relations between Turkey and the European Union have been tested during Europe’s current economic woes. The goal of becoming a member of the EU has become less of a priority for a Turkey undergoing a period of economic growth and job creation.

Europe’s attitude towards Turkey, both as a strategic partner and as a potential candidate for EU membership, is unclear, if at times incoherent. Given Europe’s position and Turkey’s growth and newfound strategic regional importance, Turkey’s accession to Union membership cannot remain in the limbo that it is.
