Summary: Decision by the Council of the European Union in March 2019 to renew sanctions over actions against Ukraine's territorial integrity. Further information: The Council decided on 15 March 2019 to add eight Russian officials to the list of those subject to restrictive measures in respect of actions undermining or threatening Ukraine's territorial integrity. The new listings were adopted as a response to escalation in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov and the consequent action by Russia. It was also decided to extend the validity of the restrictive measures for a further six months. The Council removed one deceased person from the list. The measures apply to 170 persons and 44 entitites. They consist of a travel ban and an asset freeze. Operators from the European Union (EU) are also forbidden from making funds available to the listed individuals and entities. The EU requested the immediate release of all detained Ukrainian seamen as well as the return of the seized vessels and free passage of all ships through the Kerch Strait. It also reaffirmed its commitment to international law, the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine and the EU's policy of non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea. |
