Unsettled status? the big challenge of securing EU citizens’ residence rights after Brexit

The UK in a Changing Europe promotes rigorous, high-quality and independent research into the complex and ever changing relationship between the UK and the European Union (EU).

It provides an authoritative, non-partisan and impartial reference point for those looking for information, insights and analysis about UK-EU relations that stands aside from the politics surrounding the debate.

The Initiative’s work is tailored to be easily accessible to policy makers, businesses, journalists, civil society organisations, educational institutions and the general public who are interested in the UK’s relationship with the EU.

It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and based at King’s College London.Substantial numbers of UK residents could be at risk of losing their legal status after Brexit, with particularly vulnerable groups including victims of domestic abuse, elderly people and children, a new Migration Observatory report published in April 2018 showed.

The report Unsettled Status? Which EU Citizens are at Risk of Failing to Secure their Rights after Brexit? – represented the most comprehensive effort to date to estimate the size of different groups who could struggle to secure settled status after Brexit. This included vulnerable people who may find it difficult to complete an application and provide the necessary evidence, as well as EU citizens who may simply not realise that they were covered by the new regulations and needed to apply for 'Settled Status' (SS).
