In Crimea in 2014, Russia has started off by creating a fait accompli. The West’s response to President Putin has not only been critical; he has also found an astonishing number of apologists. Two former German chancellors have expressed their understanding for his behavior. Such sympathetic rhetoric is anything but appropriate, however, as Jana Puglierin warns here.
