The Scientific Committees provide the European Commission with the sound scientific advice it needs when preparing policy and proposals relating to consumer safety, public health and the environment. The Committees also draw the Commission's attention to the new or emerging problems which may pose an actual or potential threat. In the interest of transparency, the Opinions of the Committees are made available as quickly as possible following a request for advice from the Commission. In addition, the agendas, minutes of plenary meetings and lists of members are published.
From 2009 the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products has changed its name to the Scientific Committee on Consumer Services.
