4,000 immigrants reach Italy by boat in 48 hours – as minister calls for EU help

Italy announced on the 9 April 2014 that 4,000 immigrants had reached its shores by boat in 48 hours – the highest number since it began a naval operation to handle the influx after two shipwrecks in 2013.

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano urged the EU to "take the situation in hand."
