Having only recently emerged from the military’s sway, Turkey faces a future clouded by the threat of a different, civilian kind of authoritarianism. If Turkey is to fulfil its potential as a democratic beacon for the Middle East, it will need leaders who confront the past through a meticulous application of the rule of law, rather than the politics of retribution.
