The European Parliament's internal market committee adopted on 25 April 2017 its negotiating position regarding a proposal addressing geo-blocking and other forms of discrimination based on customers' nationality, place of residence or place of establishment within the internal market.

Members of the committee approved a set of amendments to the original proposal, putting forward rules to ensure that buyers of goods or services from another member states are treated like local customers.

The draft law was put forward by the European Commission in May 2016 in the framework of its Digital Single Market strategy and as part of a so-called 'eCommerce package'. The Council of the European Union agreed on its own negotiating position in November 2016.
