The European Parliament's civil liberties committee approved on 2 March 2017 a resolution urging the European Commission to temporarily reintroduce visa requirements for US citizens, given the country's non-reciprocity of visa-free access to nationals of five EU member states.

Members of the committee called on the Commission to adopt the necessary legal measures 'within two months'.

The United States were notified in April 2014 of non-reciprocity regarding their visa policy concerning some EU member states. The deadline was in April 2016, after which the Commission had yet to take any measures. However, it published a Communication on this issue. In December 2016 it also published a report on the developments thus far. Also in December, the Parliament held a debate on visa reciprocity.
