Portugal's parliament approved on 22 February 2016 in first reading the country's national budget for 2016, pledging to reverse austerity measures. It was seen as high-risk by critics and investors, with the centre-left government under pressure from the European Union to stay on a disciplined path.

It was also the first time in over 40 years of the country's democracy that leftist parties within the parliament voted in favour of a budget document.
