The row highlights a power struggle within Turkey’s judiciary, whose senior members have traditionally been staunchly secularist and persistent opponents of prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government. Recently, the European Commission had questioned the 'independence, impartiality and efficiency' of the judiciary in its 2009 report on Turkey’s membership talks, and said the conduct of high profile cases raised concerns about the quality of investigations. |
