The leader of Austria's social democrats (SPÖ) launched on 11 January 2017 a bid to win back voters who have defected to the radical right's FPÖ party.

The 10-year plan showed a focus on creating jobs, boosting public investment and taxing multinationals. It also included a proposal to implement a rule of preference which discriminated against EU workers.

SPÖ was badly hit by a shift in the electorare which resulted in increased support for the FPÖ. This was particularly visible during the much contested presidential election held in 2016.
