The German government refuted on 2 September 2016 media reports that it sought to distance itself from a parliamentary resolution that recognised the Armenian massacre as genocide.

The alledged move was seen as a political gesture towards Turkey due to a ban applied to German politicians on visiting German troops stationed at the Incirlik air base in southern Turkey.

Media reported that the ban had been lifted later in the month.
