A Milan court sentenced Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian prime minister, to four years in prison for tax fraud on the 26 October 2012 – although, with two levels of appeal remaining, he was unlikely to spend time behind bars in the near future, if at all.

The convictions was set to intensify a power struggle within his centre-right People of Liberty (PDL) party while adding to the mounting problems of Italy’s government under Mario Monti.
