The IHS Markit's Purchasing Managers' Index published on the 22 July 2016 suggested that there was already a negative impact on the United Kingdom economy from the decision in the EU Referendum on the 23 June 2016 to leave the EU. Both manufacturing and service sectors saw a decline in output and orders, although exports were lifted by the weakening of the pound.

'July saw a dramatic deterioration in the economy, with business activity slumping at the fastest rate since the height of the global financial crisis in early-2009', said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit.
