EUObserver reported that following a meeting of all major parties in Bulgaria on the 17 June 2014 President Rosen Plevenliev announced that it had been agreed agreed that national elections would be held between 28 September and 12 October 2014 – more than two years ahead of schedule.

The move was prompted by the results of the May 2014 European Parliament election in Bulgaria, which resulted in a change in the balance of power.

Bulgaria's prime minister Plamen Oresharski resigned on the 23 July 2014 ahead of the snap elections.
