A reactor at the Kozloduy nuclear power station in Bulgaria was shut down, December 2002, as the government began complying with a condition for EU membership.

The European Union rejected a plea from Balkan countries in 2007 to restart two reactors at the Kozloduy nuclear plant in Bulgaria to ease power shortages.
