Operations of the Bulgarian section of the South Stream gas pipeline were suspended for a second time in August 2014, while the project did not meet the legal requirements of the European Commission. BBC News reported Laurent Ruseckas, global gas analyst at the economic research firm IHS as saying: 'Bulgaria has been strongly supportive of South Stream, which will give it greater security of gas supply - but as the situation in Ukraine has deteriorated, it has come under increasing pressure from Brussels to stop co-operating with Gazprom on the project'. According to a report published on the website of the Bulgarian defence ministry, Russian propaganda, especially via Bulgarian political and economic personalities, and the media, put the economic and energy security of the country to the test, and undermined its defence capacities. In a separate feature EurActiv also reported a Russian newspaper article of the 18 August 2014 which suggested that Russia had a 'plan B' in case Bulgaria continued to obstruct the construction of the South Stream pipeline. This would involve building a pipeline to Italy and Austria, through Turkey and Greece, and avoiding Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and Slovenia. |
