The FT reported that United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron gave a strong hint on the 29 September 2012 that he would support a referendum on a new European treaty after the next election (expected in 2015).

The Prime Minister was under growing pressure from Conservative backbenchers to hold an in-out referendum immediately. Article suggested that he hoped that any talks on treaty change, resulting from greater fiscal union among eurozone members, would not take place until after the 2015 election, thereby delaying the need for a plebiscite.

Separately, one of the UK Labour Party's shadow cabinet Jim Murphy said on the i October 2012 that Britain should eventually stage an in-or-out referendum on membership of the European Union.
