United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron said on the BBC on the 30 October 2011 that he was actively seeking ways to rebalance the UK’s relationship with the European Union, but indicated that he would be held back by Liberal Democrat coalition partners who were in favour of less sweeping reform.

Mr Cameron's comments came as Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister, issued a stinging attack on Conservative eurosceptics, accusing them of committing 'economic suicide' in their attempt to distance the UK from the EU after the eurozone bail-out.

Both parties have agreed in the coalition document to 'examine' the EU’s current competences but Lib Dems are keen to emphasise that this does not give licence for the large-scale repatriation of powers from Brussels that some Tories were now suggesting.
