Commission approves deployment of European Union Mission to observe Guatemala Elections on 9 November 2003: EU funding EUR 1.7 million

On the 12 September 2003, the European Commission approved the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the presidential, parliamentary and local elections in Guatemala scheduled for 9 November 2003, with a possible Presidential run off on 28 December.

The 2003 elections represented a challenge for Guatemalan society, as the necessary strengthening of democratic institutions would depend to a large extent on whether the election process was held in accordance with international standards.
