The European Commission adopted a regulation, on 2 May 2001, to implement the banana import regime in line with the understanding arrived at with the US before Easter 2001 and later with Ecuador. The new rules cover the management of import licence arrangements and will apply from 01 July 2001.

As at present, the new arrangements would be largely managed on the basis of historical references, albeit with significant changes.
