On 6 October 2016, the European Commission proposed fishing opportunities for deep-sea fish stocks in the EU and international waters in the North-East Atlantic for 2017-2018.

Over the years, fishing activity and associated jobs have been lessening as stocks become more and more limited. The proposal presented on that day by the Commission aimed to reverse that trend.
