On 27 of April 2017, the European Commission decided to refer Ireland to the Court of Justice of the EU over failing to transpose the Accounting Directive into its national legal system.

A timely and correct implementation of the Accounting Directive is an important step to improve and simplify financial reporting which is particularly important for small companies.

In September 2015, the European Commission formally requested Ireland to apply the Directive. Since then, Ireland has not complied with the Commission's reasoned opinion sent to the Irish authorities in June 2016.
