The European Commission registered on 10 January 2017 a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) inviting it 'to propose to member states a ban on glyphosate, to reform the pesticide approval procedure and to set EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use'.

The legal admissibility of the initiative was discussed by the College of Commissioners, but not the substance of the initiative.

The European Ciziens Initiatives (ECIs) were introduced with the Lisbon Treaty and launched as an agenda-setting tool in the hands of citizens.
