Background and further information: In 2015, the European Commission launched a review of cross border obstacles across the EU, which identified 239 specific cases of obstacles of administrative and legal nature. This Communication highlights ways in which the EU and its Member States can reduce the complexity, length and costs of cross-border interaction and promote the pooling of services along internal borders. It hopes to contribute to the reflection process on territorial cooperation by proposing measures and issuing recommendations that make it easier for internal land border regions to cooperate, contribute to reducing hurdles and help border citizens and businesses use the full potential of these regions. The Commission aims to make good practices available and provide expert advice with the creation of a hub of Commission experts, the Border Focal Point, and the selection of up to 20 projects offering innovative solutions to deal with cross border issues. In addition, in the context of the reflection of the future of EU finances, this Communication provides food for thoughts in the shaping of the next generation of cross border cooperation ('interreg') programmes. The European Commission published on 20 September 2017 a Communication on enhacing cooperation between border regions across the European Union. The document includes a set of new concrete actions and a list of ongoing initiatives to develop further, to help EU border regions grow faster and ever closer. |
