Summary:

The European Commission adopted on 14 November 2017 a Communication on using Education and Culture to strengthen the European identity.

The ideas formulated were intended as a contribution to the EU Leaders' meeting on 17 November 2017 in Gothenburg.

Further information:

The Commission believes that it is in the shared interest of all Member States to harness the full potential of education and culture as drivers for job creation, economic growth and social fairness as well as a means to experience European identity in all its diversity.

The Communication proposes the creation of a European Area of Education by 2025. This includes:

+ More effective mobility;
+ Mutual recognition of diplomas by initiating a 'Sorbonne process';
+ Greater cooperation on curricula development;
+ Improving language learning;
+ Promoting lifelong learning;
+ Mainstreaming innovation and digital skills in education;
+ Supporting teachers;
+ Creating a network of European universities;
+ Investing in education;
+ Preserving cultural heritage and fostering a sense of a European identity and culture;
+ Strengthening the European dimension of Euronews.
