The election campaign was thrown into turmoil on the 10 June 2010, with Robert Fico, the country’s prime minister, facing potentially damaging corruption allegations that may hurt his chances of retaining power.

In the background was also the current citizenship tensions between Hungary and the Slovak Republic. On the 26 May 2010 a law making it easier for ethnic Hungarians living abroad to obtain Hungarian citizenship was adopted in Hungary. The move sparked an angry response from neighbouring Slovakia.
