The economic crisis has knocked the EU's longterm strategic targets off track with planned poverty-reduction and employment goals unlikely to be met by 2020, according to a Eurostat report published on the 29 October 2013.

However, EurActiv reported on the 31 October 2013 a contrary analysis developed by CDC Climat, which revealed that the massive uptake of renewable energies since 2005 has had a greater impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions than the economic slowdown.
