Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas announced on the 16 June 2013 that he would resign after days of political turmoil.

His ruling coalition would try to form a new government led by someone nominated by his Civic Democratic Party.

Pressure had been growing on Mr Necas to quit since prosecutors charged his closest aide, Jana Nagyova on the 14 June 2013 with corruption and abuse of power.

In a blog entry published in July 2013 Seán Hanley, academic specialising in Central Europe wrotes that following the collapse of the Nečas government, the Czech Republic’s President, Miloš Zeman, had exploited the situation by attempting to impose a technocratic caretaker administration. He argued that Zeman’s move posed a fundamental challenge to the parliamentary character of Czech democracy. This theme was further explored in a major feature in Spiegel Online International on the 12 July 2013 (hyperlink below), which suggested that there was a crisis of democracy in a number of Central European countries.
