A unofficial referendum on the status of the Donetsk region ('oblast'), in the eastern part of Ukraine, was held on 11 May 2014 by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. A similar referendum was held in the Luhansk region. The referendum question was 'Do you support the Act of State Self-rule of the Donetsk People's Republic?'. The Ukrainian government in Kiev and Western countries did not recognise the legitimacy of the referendums. No independent observers monitored the referendum. Subsequently, pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region claimed a resounding victory in the 'self-rule' referendum, saying 89% voted in favour. EU Foreign Ministers were due to meet on the 12 May 2014 to discuss a tightening of sanctions against Russia. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk was also due to visit Brussels on the 12 May 2014 to talk to the European Commission about planned financial aid. Self-declared Donetsk People's Republic leader Denis Pushilin urged Russia on the 12 May 2014 to listen to the 'will of the people' and 'absorb' the eastern region of Donetsk following the referendum. |
