EurActiv and other sources reported that it emerged in September 2012 that the biggest shake-up in Europe's aerospace and defence sector in more than a decade was being discussed. The United Kingdom's BAE Systems and Airbus-owner EADS said they were in advanced talks to create an industry giant that would overtake rival Boeing in sales and contend with defence cutbacks in Europe and the United States.

EurActiv wrote that despite its advantages, the deal would face numerous regulatory, security and cultural hurdles and its prospects were far from certain.
