Embattled Irish PM survives confidence vote

Brian Cowen, Ireland’s embattled Prime Minister, survived a challenge to his leadership of Fianna Fáil, winning a vote of confidence on the 18 January 2011 after securing the public backing of Brian Lenihan, the finance minister and key rival.
