Emma Bonino to lead the EU Election Observation Mission to Ecuador

On the 10 September 2002, the European Union sent an Election Observation Mission to Ecuador (EOM) in view of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections scheduled for 20 October 2002. The EOM was led by Emma Bonino (Italy) former Commissioner and current Member of the European Parliament.

The deployment of the EOM followed an invitation from the Ecuadorian election authorities and was a concrete expression of EU's effort to support the fostering of democratic institutions and stability in the Andean country.
