[Energy and the Ukrainian crisis] Russia says it will halt gas deliveries if Ukraine doesn’t pay

On the 12 May 2014, Russia reiterated its threat to stop supplying Ukraine with natural gas on if Kyiv did not pay in advance for June deliveries, and said further talks on the issue were also contingent on payment.

Pavel Zavalny, the President of the Russian Gas Society, warned that Bulgaria and Bosnia could be be left without natural gas supplies if Russia halted deliveries via Ukraine.

The head of Slovakia's pipeline operator, stated that a pipeline to transport gas to Ukraine via Slovakia should be ready for pumping at full capacity starting in September 2014.

Ukraine's state gas company, Naftogaz, said on the 27 May 2014 that no real progress had been made with Russia's Gazprom over its gas debt, and on pricing, in talks in Berlin, aimed at settling a dispute that threatens to disrupt gas flows to western Europe.

Delegations from Russia and Ukraine were scheduled a meeting in Berlin on the 30 May 2014 to further discuss an exit for the gas crisis [for more information on the meeting, please check the relevant related URL].

After Ukraine made a payment to Russia on the 30 May 2014 Gazprom postponed the introduction of an advance payment scheme for Ukraine until 9 June 2014 to give Kiev an opportunity to pay for May 2014 gas deliveries.

The European Union, Russia and Ukraine had another round of gas talks on the 2 June 2014. The countries agreed to examine a payment plan to settle Kyiv's multi-billion gas debts and fix a price for supplies until June 2015, offering the promise of averting an energy crisis over the crucial winter period.

Russian and Ukrainian officials failed to reach a solution on the 10 June 2014 to a dispute over energy that has exacerbated tensions and led to concerns about cutoffs of natural gas to the European Union. Ukraine said that an offer from Russia of a discount of $100 for every 1,000 cubic metres of gas was part of a "trap".
