Analysis feature. Turkey is a transformed country, driven more by hardnosed strategic and commercial logic than ideology. A dynamic and expanding economy, enhanced democratic rights and an assertive foreign policy have infused Turks with new self-confidence.

Yet this is neither anti-western nor neo-Ottoman – nor even anti-Israeli. Turkey is re-emerging – post-cold war – as a regional power, and demonstrating to the EU that it has options and should be seen as an asset to Europe and the west.
