On 2 August 2012 chief negotiators for the European Union and Iran agreed to hold more talks about Iranian nuclear programme, yet no progress was achieved. The European Union policy chief Catherine Ashton, who represented the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and Britain, attempted to persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear programme by economic sanctions and diplomacy.
