Europe is set for a tough new regulatory regime for hedge funds and private equity companies after European Union ministers reached a long-awaited agreement on rules to cover the sector at the Ecofin Council, Luxembourg, 19 October 2010.

The Council reached agreement on the draft directive on the management of hedge funds and other alternative investment funds, with a view to concluding negotiations with the European Parliament very soon so as to enable the text to be adopted at first reading in the EP.
