EU priorities for the 71st UN General Assembly

2016 marked marks the 50th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of two international treaties: the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which were cornerstones of international human rights.

The European Union was very committed to multilateralism and to deepening its cooperation with the United Nations. During its July 2016 plenary session, the European Parliament was due to debate the Committee on Foreign Affairs' report setting out proposals for the Parliament's recommendation to the Council on the EU's priorities for the 71st General Assembly, which would take place from 13 until 26 September 2016, in New York.
