The Istanbul Convention is a new landmark treaty of the Council of Europe that opened the path for creating a legal framework at pan-European level to protect women against all forms of violence, and prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence. It entered into force in August 2014, having been opened for signature in May 2011. On 11 May 2017, the Council of the European Union adopted two decisions (2017/865 and 2017/866) for the EU to join the Istanbul Convention.
