EPP Candidate for the European Commission Presidency Jean-Claude Juncker said on the 7 May 2014 that the UK Conservative Party decision to leave the alliance with the centre-right European People's Party bloc meant that United Kingdom voters would not be able to vote for him to lead the European Commission.

Britain's UK Independence Party (UKIP) took out an advert in a national newspaper on the 19 May 2014 to assert it was not racist as rival politicians and the media united to condemn its characterisation of Romanian immigrants.
