The European Parliament's plenary session endorsed on 4 October 2016 a draft proposal revising the rules to prevent trade in goods and services that may contribute to torture or execution.

The Parliament was responsible for introducing a ban on the marketing and transit of equipment used for cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of people in third countries, during negotiations with member states which were concluded in June.
