In a book published in France on the 19 August 2016 ('Conversations Privees avec le President') it was said that François Hollande had suggested he would run in the 2017 Presidential election provided he saw a chance of winning, but would quit politics if he lost.

The chance of this happening was said to have increased as the France's national statistics institute INSEE published figures on the 18 August 2016 that showed that unemployment in France had fallen below 10% for the first time in 4 years.

The French president has said on a number of occasions previously that he would not run for a second term in 2017 if unemployment didn’t decline 'significantly and credibly' by the end of his first term.
