French far right at ‘gates of power’

French Prime Minister Manual Valls warned on the 7 September 2014 that the far-right was 'at the gates of power', as the ruling left struggled under its unpopular president, Francois Hollande.

A poll released on the 5 September 2014 predicted that Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French National Front, would beat Mr Hollande in the event of a second round run-off between them. However, other surveys suggested that she would lose if facing former president Nicolas Sarkozy or another candidate from the centre right.
