Article reports that in the midst of the eurozone crisis, the first big clash of the 2012 French presidential election campaign erupted in November 2011 over a pact between the opposition Socialist party and the Greens to dismantle a large chunk of the country’s nuclear energy industry.

The agreement to shut down 24 of France’s 58 nuclear reactors by 2025 was roundly condemned by President Nicolas Sarkozy, the industry and the trade unions.

The nuclear reduction plan was the most prominent part of a deal under which the Socialist party will receive the support of the Greens in the parliamentary election, which follows soon after the presidential poll, in 2012 in return for guaranteed seats for the Greens in the National Assembly.

Separately, it was reported that the head of the French nuclear safety agency had said that France needed to shore up safety mechanisms in its nuclear reactors to avoid catastrophe in the event of a natural disaster, although he did not forsee a need to close any facilities.
