A meeting of the General Affairs Council - dedicated to the Brexit negotiations - was held on 22 May 2017. The agenda includes the following topics:

+ Adoption of a decision authorising the beginning of talks with the United Kingdom following the notification of its intention to leave the European Union, including a set of directives setting the EU position for the first phase of the negotiations;

+ Preparation for the European Council summit of June 2017;

+ Creation of a dedicated working party with a permanent chair to assist the Council of the European Union and the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) on all matters related to the UK withdrawal from the EU;

It was pointed out that the negotiations were going to be conducted respecting the principles for transparency endorsed by the Coreper.
